Your Colon and Your Health
"constipation is the #1 affliction underlying nearly every ailment"
What, exactly is constipation? Many think having a bowel movement every three days is normal while others think one movement every single morning is proof they have healthy bowels. Another fallacy is if a person “goes often” throughout the day - a watery/loose stool - then they couldn’t be constipated - but there is usually an impaction at the root of that problem. The word constipation means “to press or crowd together, to pack, to cram”. This would mean that packed accumulation of feces in the bowel makes evacuation difficult. With the large intestine or colon being approximately 5 feet long, you can understand that though there may be a movement daily, this does not mean that you are not constipated. If the average person ingests 3 meals a day, logically speaking there should be at least 3 bowel movements a day. Intestinal constipation causes CELLULAR constipation. It also increases the workload of all other excretory organs – kidney, skin, liver, lungs and lymph. Primary causes of constipation are medications, poor nutrition, ignoring the urge to go, lack of exercise, emotional/mental distress and not drinking water.
Strange as it may sound, people do not really notice the shape, size, color or smell of their own bowel movements. It is considered a taboo subject, and these things are rarely discussed. If you happen to take an animal to the Vet, fecal samples are the norm. Veterinarians utilize the study of the stool sample to determine the health of the animal. Our society considers itself civilized and not in danger of parasites, worms or other infestations, so we are rarely, if ever asked by a medical doctor about our bowels or tested. Few people realize that the #1 cause of death world-wide is worm infestation. It is rare in allopathic medicine to even hear that diet and regularity of bowel movements may play a large part in your illness.
Way back in April of 1982, The Saturday Evening Post had an article on the subject of constipation and cancer malignancies:
“Physician Nicholas L. Petrakis of University of California reviewed the history of past researchers who failed to identify constipation as a factor in the development of malignancies. As a matter of curiosity, he chose to include questions concerning bowel function in the research protocols developed for his studies of breast-fluid chemistry and cytology. He found that women who have 2 or fewer bowel movements per week have 4x the risk of breast disease (benign or malignant) as women who have 1 or more bowel movements per day- "We found that 5% of women having 1 bowel movement per day would have abnormal dysplastic cells, while 10% of women having fewer than 1 bowel movement a day would have this abnormality and 20% of women having 2 or fewer bowel movements per week would show these dysplastic changes in cell character of the breast fluid." He added: "We found that 70% of the women we tested had exogenous (foreign) chemicals in the breast fluid. We don't know why they are there, but we do know that the breast cells are in contact with the bloodstream, which will contain foreign substances absorbed into the circulation system from the skin, lungs, and the gastrointestinal tract."
Did you get that? WOMEN WHO HAVE 2 OR FEWER BOWEL MOVEMENTS PER WEEK HAVE 4X THE RISK OF BREAST DISEASE AS WOMEN WHO HAVE 1 OR MORE BOWEL MOVEMENTS PER DAY.
My own story of breast cancer back in 2005 is instructive. As a 45 yr old woman at that time I had been chronically constipated most of my life - not going 1x a day often. I suffered from fibromyalgia, chronic fatigue syndrome, MS and Lupus prior to having my breast cancer diagnosis. I had 26 doctors in 5 years and not one asked about my diet and/or bowels. When I radically changed my diet - removing all grains/seeds/nuts - dropping seed oils and sugar my body woke up. I began to learn about colon hydrotherapy and medical ozone therapy. I chose no chemo or radiation - and only a lumpectomy. All autoimmune disorders disappeared. At 65 I have complete health - and no prescription drugs.
A video on my YouTube channel discusses the anatomy of the colon. The blood vessels/arteries are attached to the colon wall and as you can imagine - toxins from the colon easily spread via the blood vessels into the bloodstream and throughout the body. As Norman W. Walker has said:
“The fact of the matter is that constipation is the number one affliction underlying nearly every ailment; it can be imputed to be the initial, primary cause of nearly every disturbance of the human system. It is vital to stress that constipation affects the health of the colon upon which the health of the body in its entirety depends.”
Dr. Bernard Jensen, DC, Ph.D., Nut. also has important words to say on this subject:
“Both British and South African medical scientists strongly insist that what is usually referred to as “regularity” may be a matter of life and death. Insufficient numbers of bowel movements … may often explain the existence of gall bladder disorders, heart problems, varicose veins, appendicitis, clotting in deep veins, hiatal hernia, diverticulosis, arthritis and cancer of the colon” and further - “In most cases, simply changing the diet and eating habits will alleviate many bowel problems without surgery.”
As an I-ACT (International Association for Colon Therapy) National Board Certified Colon therapist for over 20 years I have seen constipation as the #1 affliction that affects all other health complaints in a fundamental way.
Thanks for reading!
When I went from very clean ketogenic (no UPF) to carnivore, I can tell you how important my bowel movements became. My gut flora had to adapt and boy, it struggled at the start. Every day I was hoping for it to be normal again and after about three weeks it has normalised. Obviously, normal is a relative term, because I have stopped eating fiber so there is much less to exit.
Great synopsis, Wejolyn! I like your reference about Veterinarians often examining stool samples as part of the regular diagnostic process. Why don't human doctors do that? Same thing with breath. There are several disease states that cause various breath odors too.
One comment on one of the primary causes of constipation you list: poor nutrition. Many people don't understand that all highly processed foods are just as bad for you as chemicals and drugs. There are estimated to be (no one really knows) somewhere between 14.000 and 30,000 chemicals that become part of the food we eat. Many of these contribute to constipation.
