The mucus membranes of healthy people have a coating of mucus and immunoglobulin that helps fight fungi. Immunologist Patricia Lucas, Ph.D has hypothesized that the major causes of immune disorders are defects in the gastrointestinal mucosa due to Candida. Lucas presented scientific data to the Society for Clinical Ecology supporting her hypotheses that Candida causes multiple hypersensitivities by first damaging the lining of the gastrointestinal tract (leaky gut syndrome).
Secondary infections like Candida Albicans in the body happen when the immune system is not functioning well due to initial infections beforehand. If the mucosal surface (integrity) is non-existent or broken down, dysbiosis will exist. The body is also now wide open for other pathogens to co-exist as well. Candida is not a ‘first cause’ of illness or disease but it co-exists easily with all the other problems going on.
A person’s health that has deteriorated over time with little or no gut integrity will have an immune system that is paralyzed by the myriads of toxins coming off pathogens. The body can become a “collector” of viruses, bacteria and parasites.
We must examine the “terrain” that Candida overgrowth flourishes in. Diet plays a huge role in- we know that candida loves sugars, starches and refined carbs. Stress levels also matter - whether internal or external. I am currently writing a series of articles on this subject but wanted to quickly drop a little video this morning.
